I am a highly qualified, experienced and motivated individual who has excellent communication skills. I have worked in care for nearly 20 years, 5 of which with Hometouch. In this time I have gained a vast knowledge base, working in many care settings and supporting clients of all ages with a multitude of conditions and illnesses. I am comfortable with using equipment to aid mobility and supporting people that need oxygen/ventilation.
I am adaptable, conscientious and enthusiastic. I like to get to know the person I am caring for so I know their nature, what they like and dislike, activities they enjoy and their interests, rather than just treating/caring for their condition. It is important that person is seen and valued and I recognise they were their own person before they needed care- I like to get to know that person.
I am experienced in working with people to help rehabilitate them, giving them opportunities to build on skills that help them achieve goals they set for themselves. This is a value I instill in my everyday work, engaging people fully in their care and providing opportunity to develop their skills and in turn, their sense of self worth.
I know people need varying degrees or structure in terms of their daily routine and I am comfortable with rigid structure to the daily tasks and activities, as well as no/little planning and taking the day as it comes. It’s vital I can do this as a carer because this means I can adapt to any situation, in particular emergency situations.
I make sure the person is offered choice around every part of their day so they are in control of their care. I like to provide a safe environment so a person can make choices and express themselves. I do also recognise there may be situations or circumstances where an unwise decision may be made- in these cases, I try to guide the person to think about the consequences of their choice and provide alternatives that are more favourable for them, without restricting that decision.
