I am a patient and compassionate person - qualities that are absolutely key for a carer. I am a firm believer in empowering people to achieve goals so I will happily spend most of my day supporting someone to do tasks that reach goals for them. I am very sensitive to the fact that people may have goals that are not attainable at the time or may even be unrealistic but it is vital I am sensitive to their feelings and I will try to break down a goal into smaller, more attainable goals to prevent them becoming disheartened. Someones emotional well-being can heavily influence their physical well being so it is important to consider in their daily care.
In terms of caring for someones physical well-being, my career in care so far has provided me with a wealth of experience supporting many different people with many different conditions. I am confident in dealing with people that have complex health issues. I am willing to up-skill and learn any interventions the client would benefit from so I am able to continue to support and meet their needs. I have plenty of experience in dementia care and have supported people with early stages, advanced dementia and all in between.
One of the most important things I have learned so far when caring for people with dementia is that validating their feelings can really help them in times of distress. All humans have a desire to not be alone and this is one of the main parts of my job as a carer. As with all of my care, but particularly end of life care, I am sensitive, compassionate and make sure everything I do is for the clients comfort and sense of peace and happiness.
I enjoy spending time with others, learning about people and their hobbies. Doing activities together and really getting to know someone. These are the main reasons I got into care- I love to interact with and watch someone grow.
