Somerset is a large, predominantly rural county. Somerset Council describes a spread of market towns, coastal communities and dispersed villages, which makes services harder to reach. About 571,600 people lived in the council area at the 2021 Census. The over-65 population is projected to grow by 35.7% between 2023 and 2040, and the over-85s are expected to nearly double.
Many families arrange care for a parent in Taunton, Yeovil or Bridgwater, or in a village on the Levels or the Quantocks. A live-in carer is already in the home, so daily support doesn’t depend on how far the nearest town is.
Try a few options to start with
Test whether it's a good match
One that suits both you and your family's needs
Somerset follows a home-first model. Most people leave hospital for their own home and have their longer-term care needs assessed once they’ve recovered. Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil Hospital are both run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, and local NHS planning sits with NHS Somerset ICB.
The council’s intermediate care and reablement service offers recovery support of up to six weeks, which is free and not means-tested during that time. Families take part in discharge planning throughout. If more support is likely after that, a Hometouch care expert can talk through live-in care before the reablement period ends, so the next step is planned.
As a CQC regulated carer provider, we can arrange full costs and available live-in carers for:
Dementia or any other condition-specific care
Postoperative or any other injury-related care
Overnight, companionship or disability care
Hometouch's managed live-in care service is regulated by the Care Quality Commission and rated Good. Inspectors assess how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led a service is, and the full report is available on the CQC website.

Understanding whether another provider can better match your needs
In Somerset, the council’s Financial Assessment and Benefits team works out what someone contributes, but only after a care and support assessment finds they’re eligible. The council’s online eligibility checker takes about a minute and gives an indication, not a final decision. If capital is above £23,250, someone is treated as a self-funder and usually arranges and pays for their own care. The council can still arrange care for a self-funder whose needs qualify, but it normally charges an arrangement fee. Savings between £14,250 and £23,250 may mean a contribution. The council also points families to Citizens Advice for independent advice.
For families arranging live-in care privately, a Hometouch care expert can set out the costs in full before you commit to anything.
Based on your family's needs.
