Hospital discharge and NHS support
Families often first consider live-in care after discharge from hospital. In Guernsey, discharge is planned by HSC (the States of Guernsey’s Health and Social Care committee) rather than an NHS trust, often with a discharge planning nurse for more complex cases. A Hometouch live-in carer can be arranged quickly to bridge that gap. They can provide personal care, mobility support, and companionship from the day someone returns home. This support can also continue longer term if necessary.

Paying for live-in care in Guernsey
Guernsey’s funding system differs from mainland local authority funding. The island runs its own Long-Term Care Insurance Scheme through Social Security contributions. This currently covers residential, nursing and dementia care in the care home environment, rather than at home. An extension to cover home care is being explored by the States of Guernsey, but this hasn’t yet been implemented. For now, live-in care is arranged and paid for privately.
